Cobia Fishing

Fishing for cobia can be an exhilarating experience.  Techniques involved for cobia fishing can most directly be related to a combination of hunting and fishing.  Cobias are migratory fish that show up in February and March riding the backs of giant Manta Rays.  When Manta Rays or big turtles are located this time of year it’s time to put your casting skills to the test.  Often as many as 20-30 Cobia can be seen following these big Manta Rays and it’s your job to pick the one you want and place an accurate cast in front of the fish.   Cobia make a second showing on the beaches and our local inshore wrecks during the months of June and July.  You can expect exciting sight-fishing for Cobia which fight like a bull, look like a catfish and will occasionally jump.

Cobia can range in size from 15lbs barely legal to 75-80lbs.  Common average size fish for are area 35lbs.  Cobia are excellent table fair, the meat is firm and it freezes very well.

Cobia are a common by-catch to bottom fishing trips and are often caught while live bait fishing for kings along the beach during the summer.
