Trolling for Wahoo out of the St. Lucie Inlet in Stuart Florida can be hit or miss year round. The best time of year to target Wahoo would probably be in the winter, December and January and then again in the summer months of August and September. Most Wahoo catches are accidental during the winter because of the desire to pursue sailfish catches. Monofilament leaders are used to target Sailfish making in difficult to catch Wahoo during the winter. If your desire is Wahoo during the winter months just specify that to your Captain and he will make the needed changes to target the migrating Wahoo. Average weight of Wahoo locally caught is 25lbs with fish as big as a 100lbs being caught by some lucky anglers.
However, some of the best Wahoo fishing in the world exists on the East Side of the Gulfstream current during the months of February, March and April. Catches of 5-15 Wahoo per trip averaging an impressive 40lbs can be expected. Wahoo over 70lbs are a regular catch on these trips to the East Side.
Wahoo meat freezes very well and is excellent table fair.
By-catch includes Sailfish, Dolphin, Kingfish, Barracuda, and Tuna and Blue Marlin on the East Side trips.
