Catching a swordfish can be one of the greatest accomplishments even a seasoned angler can experience. Fishing for swordfish off the coast of South Florida has rebounded in recent years due to a closure on long lining. The preferred method for fishing for Swordfish on the DayMaker is fishing for them at night time. A nocturnal feeder, swordfish rise from the deepest depths during the night and make their way towards the surface to feed. We deploy 4-5 baits (squid, lady fish, Bonito, strips) at depths ranging from 75-300ft below the surface. Lights are put on the line close to the bait to help attract other bait to your bait with a hook. As the light draws the bait in the live bait draws the Swordfish in. When the Swordfish scares all the live bait away your bait is left and usually inhaled. A balloon with a light stick on top of it acts as our bobber and is what we monitor throughout the night to see if we get a bite. 98% of the time after a sword feeds he swims up, thus he takes the pressure of the lead off the balloon and the glow stick rolls over. When your light disappears it time to get cranking.

Fishing for Swordfish is not fast paced. Having a bite a night and hopefully catching the fish is great. We have many nights with 3-5 bites and that is world class. Most recent trips during the full moon have seen catch totals for a night reaching 3 and 4 fish. Some epic nights have occurred with 7-8 fish too. But this is not the mindset you want to leave the dock with, you just hope it happens when you’re there. Expecting a couple of bites a night is much more realistic. Unlike many other game fish we target, swordfish season is year-round with almost equal chances of success whatever time of the year we fish. Swordfish is one of the best eating fish that swims in the ocean. It has a deep, rich taste and a meaty and slightly oily texture. A keeper size fish is around 60lbs and the biggest fish we have encountered have exceeded 450lbs. This is an amazing fish that grinds you out during the fight and if you’re lucky you might get to see your fish jump in the moonlight (an amazing sight).

A deposit will be charged to your card if you do not show for your fishing charter and it has not been cancelled within a 14 day window proceeding your trip departure time. All trips cancelled at the Captain’s discretion because of weather or boat issues will not be charged a deposit. The deposit rate for a 1/2 day is $500 and the deposit rate for all other trips is $750 per day.
Weather Issues: Any trip decisions involving the weather are at the sole discretion of the Captain. If the Captain determines the weather is not suitable for fishing anywhere, your deposit will be returned
